Maintaining Status: How to maintain your non-immigrant F-1 status

It is very important for international students to maintain their immigration status at all times. International Programs and Services is here to advise you and help you better understand the immigration regulations governing your status, but it is your responsibility to maintain your status. Failure to maintain the terms and conditions of your nonimmigrant status is a ground for removal from the Unites States (deportation).

Please review this summary to help you maintain your F-1 status.

Mandatory Review Session:
In February each year, we organize a mandatory International Student Update and Review on each campus.  This is the time to have an in-person meeting with your DSO to review all the immigration regulations, procedures and policies regarding your status.  Please watch for the announcement sent by our DSO in January.

International students are required to attend the Annual International Student Review in February each year.  Failure to attend this review will result in a hold on your student record preventing registration for the following semester.

If students are not able to attend the live session scheduled on each campus because of internship activity outside the state, and received a confirmation from their DSO, they must review the presentation and complete the assignment to confirm they have successfully digested the content covered in the review session. The assignment shall be submitted to International Programs and Services and assessed by your DSO if you have sufficiently retained the content. If you have not retained the content you will be asked to revise the assignment until it is to your DSO’s satisfaction to release the hold on your record.
