How do I know if I am eligible to participate in Commencement?

For questions regarding eligibility, please refer to the Commencement Website under the Participant Eligibility tab of your campus.

For additional information, please contact your Student Support Counselor or academic department.

How many tickets will I receive for my ceremony?

Ticket information will be sent out once the total number of participating graduates is determined. This information is typically sent out approximately 3-4 weeks prior to the ceremony.

Based on previous ceremonies, a student participant can expect approximately 4 – 6 guest tickets – this is an estimate only.

I have submitted my Intent to Participate in Commencement. Now what?

There are no additional steps required at this time. Once the Intent to Participate form closes for all students, your academic department is contacted to confirm your ability to participate. You will be notified immediately if you are approved.

Additional information (e.g., regalia ordering) will be sent out following your approval.

Where do I order my regalia (e.g., cap and gown)?

Instructions on ordering will be sent from the Commencement email and posted on the Commencement website, per ceremony. Any specific questions regarding regalia (color, sizing, etc.) should be directed to Herff Jones customer service at 1.800.837.4235

How does hooding work for graduate students?

A master's student will wear their hood during the Commencement ceremony.

A doctoral student will carry their hood into the Commencement ceremony and be hooded on stage. If your Dissertation Chair is in attendance, they will hood you. If your Dissertation Chair is not in attendance, you will be hooded by your Division/Department Chair. If neither are in attendance, you will be hooded by your College Dean.

What additional cords can I receive?

Cords (e.g., honors, First Gen, military/veteran, global distinction) are free to student participants. You will receive all the cords you qualify for during check-in the day of your ceremony.

I submitted my Petition for Degree Conferral. Is this the same as the Intent to Participate in Commencement?

No. The degree conferral form is not the same as the Intent to Participate form.

Your degree and participating in the Commencement ceremony are two separate processes.

Student Life and Events manages the Intent to Participate in Commencement form. Questions regarding degree conferral should be directed towards your Student Support Counselor.
