Financial Resources: Loan Forgiveness, Repayment and more

Loan Repayment Awards Programs are federal jobs available to licensed master’s and doctoral-level mental health professionals who desire to work in underserved communities where the needs are the greatest. Most programs require at least a two year minimum commitment. Applications for loan repayment awards programs occur during a specific time of year through the government.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF)
In 2007, Congress created the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program to encourage individuals to enter and continue to work full-time in public service jobs. Under this program, borrowers may qualify for forgiveness of the remaining balance due on their eligible federal student loans after they have made 120 payments on those loans under certain repayment plans while employed full time by certain public service employers.

National Health Service Corp

***Note: These programs are clinical in nature therefore eligible students who may qualify must have a degree from one of the following programs: Clinical Counseling, Forensic Psychology, Clinical Psychology, and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapy.

The purpose of the NHSC Loan Repayment Program is to recruit and retain medical, nursing, dental, and behavioral/mental health clinicians in eligible communities of need designated as health professional shortage areas. Primary care medical, dental and mental/behavioral health clinicians can get up to $50,000 to repay their health profession student loans in exchange for a two-year commitment to work at an approved NHSC site in a high-need, underserved area.

The amount you receive and length of your commitment depends on where you serve and whether you select the full-time or half-time option. See the 2017 NHSC Loan Repayment Program Application and Program Guidance for details. See if your site is already approved at the NHSC Jobs Center.
